1. Botulinum Toxin is what?
Botulinum Toxin belongs to bacterial exotoxin, which is produced by Clostriduim botulinum during its growth and propagation. Botulinum toxins have high molecular weight with neurotoxic property. It is a biological toxin which could cause fatal botulism.
Popularly known by one of its trade names, BOTOXA or Dysport, it is used for various cosmetic and medical procedures.
based on their different antigenecity,Botulinum neurotoxins are classified into eight types , which are Type A, B, C1, C2, D, E, F & G. Crystalline toxin type A is the stereotype that is currently being used in formulation of BOTOXA.

3. Is BOTOXA safe to comestic use?
Yes, since BOTOXA was launched into market after receiving license from the Ministry of Health of PRC in 1999, over thousands of cases have been treated with BOTOXA. No serious adverse reaction have been reported from customers till now.

Normal clinical dose of BOTOXA is 6 to 400U, which is much less than the lethal dose of man (around 2,500 to 3,000 U),So it is very safe.

4. What is the contraindication?
BOTOXA is contraindicated in individuals with anaphylactic constitution and known hypersensitivity to this preparation, pregnancy, breast milk feeding, motor neuron disease, neuromuscular joint disease, and medications of aminoglycosides, d-penicillamine, quinine and wafarin/heparin. If there are serious immediate hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis, urticaria, edema, and dyspnea occur, stop further BOTOXA injection and conduct appropriate medical therapy at once.

5. How does BOTOXA work?
BOTOXA is a potent muscle relaxant which blocks release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junction, hence prevents muscle from contracting.

6. Are there any side effects?
There is no systemic side effect in all patients who received BOTOXA injection, even the ones who received it repeatedly in long-term. Some local side effects might occur in small amount of patients. The most common one are edema of eyelid, droopy of eyelid, lacrimation, algophthalmos and weakness of muscle. Occasionally, dyspbea or syphagia may occur in individuals after injection. However, the side effect is mild, temporary and will disappear spontaneously within a few weeks. The percentage of occurrence is more or less the same as the other similar product.

BOTOXA is eligible to patients from children to elderly. However, patients should consult their doctors before they receive the injection.

8. How to apply BOTOXA and how long is the treatment?
BOTOXA is applied non-surgically by an ultra-fine needle of syringe to inject into muscle. Pain is minimized because of the ultra-fine needle and the small dose of BOTOXA. The treatment time depends of the site of injection and the number of injection sites. Usually it is rather short and takes around 15 minutes.

BOTOXA should only be reconstituted with normal saline, 0.9% non-preserved sodium chloride. Other diluents should not be used for reconstitution.

9. How long does the effect last?
The effect of BOTOXA will last for up to 3 to 6 months or more. To carry on the effect, second injection is required after fading of the previous effect.

10. After how many injections are the patients getting tolerant to BOTOXA?
No proven information about the injection frequency for patient to have tolerance to BOTOXA. In addition, there is no evidence of antibody production by patients who have received repeated doses of BOTOXA or any systemic complications during the 6 years of continued therapy. Some patients with repeated usage of BOTOXA even found that the effect may last up to 7 to 11 months.

The onset time is varied individually and depends on the site of injection. Normally it is around a few days to 2 week.

12. How to maintain the best response to BOTOXA?
In order to minimizing the potential of neutralizing antibody formation, it is suggested to inject the lowest effective dose given at the longest intervals between injections. In this way, the response to BOTOXA is maintained satisfactorily.

14. Will the gelatin in BOTOXA trigger any adverse reactions?
Definitely not. Gelatin used in BOTOXA is derived from bovine, and it was imported from BSE-free countries. Since the launching of BOTOXA from 1997, no serious adverse reaction was found. It further proves that using gelatin is safe.

15. What is the treatment of overdose?
In case of overdose, the patient should be medically supervised for several days for signs or symptoms of systemic weakness or muscle paralysis.

Antitoxin should be administrated within 30 minutes after injection of BOTOXA.

It is found that there are some fake BOTOXA in the market claiming that their country of origin is PRC. However, there is only ONE brand in PRC with legal approval from State Food and Drug Administration, which is BOTOXA. Since it is suspicious in the raw materials of the fake products, it may cause severe allergy or adverse effects to the patients.
